Lifetime channels to air programming in tribute to Rosa Parks

(October 26, 2005)
In remembrance of the spirit and legacy of civil rights activist and icon Rosa Parks, Lifetime Television and sister network, Lifetime Real Women, will air a special night of programming on Tuesday, November 1st, honoring the late Rosa Parks, who died on Monday, Oct. 24th in Detroit. Parks' courageous actions were monumental contributions to the civil rights movement.

At 8pm (ET/PT), on Lifetime Real Women, "Intimate Portrait: Rosa Parks" shows how Rosa Parks changed the world when she uttered that historic "no" by refusing to sit in the back of a Montgomery, Alabama bus. Her act brought the civil rights movement to the forefront of the American consciousness and made her a hero. It was an unlikely role for a modest seamstress, but, as the program reveals, Rosa paid a heavy price for her fame. Guest interviews include Gloria Steinem, the late Ossie Davis and his wife, Ruby Dee, and Elaine Steele, Parks' longtime friend and co-founder of The Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute of Self-Development.

The show is followed by the movie, "The Rosa Parks Story," premiering on Lifetime Television at 9pm (ET/PT), with critically acclaimed actress Angela Bassett stars in the title role. Her defiance of a white bus driver who demanded she give up her seat for a white passenger resulted in the most effective nonviolent protest in American history. But these events were among many racial injustices that Rosa and her husband, Raymond, faced throughout their lives. "The Rosa Parks Story" also stars Emmy Award-winning actress, Cicely Tyson.
