Songwriter and radio broadcaster Joe Shamwell dies at the age of 62

(October 18, 2006) ABC Radio/Washington, D.C. research director Joe Shamwell died in his sleep Tuesday (Oct. 17). He was 62. Before joining ABC Shamwell was research director for crosstown Howard University urban AC WHUR/Washington.

Shamwell was also a prolific songwriter, penning more than 110 songs registered with BMI during his long career. Among those with whom Shamwell co-wrote music were Isaac Hayes, David Porter, Tommy Tate, Steve Cropper, William Bell and Homer Banks. Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Eddie Floyd, Tommy Tate, the Bar Kays, William Bell, Con-Funk-Shun, Johnnie Taylor, Booker T & the MG's and Peaches and Herb all recorded Shamwell's songs.

Shamwell's radio career began on WOKJ/Jackson, Miss., where he was known as "The Soul Ranger" from the mid-1970s through the 1980s. While working in Jackson, Shamwell was also a staff writer for Malaco Records and had songs recorded by Bobby "Blue" Bland, Z. Z. Hill, Little Milton, Deniece LaSalle and others. His songs have also been featured on numerous TV shows, including "Matlock," "21 Jump Street" and "L.A. Law," and in the Broadway musical "It Ain't Nothing But the Blues."

A viewing for Shamwell will take place on Monday, Oct. 23 from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. at McGuire Funeral Service, 7400 Georgia Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20012, Phone: 202-882-6600.
