'Heart & Soul' magazine returns with Yanick Rice-Lamb at editorial helm
(October 5, 2005)
Heart & Soul, the health
and fitness magazine for African-American women, has released its first
issue since coming under new ownership last year. The publication was
purchased at auction by Baltimore-based Twenty-First Century Group when
former publisher, Vanguarde Media, went bankrupt. With its new theme,
“Healthy. Wealthy. Wise.” publisher Edwin V. Advent says the
magazine is on a mission to help African-American women succeed in the
areas of health and fitness, finance, and mental and spiritual wellbeing.“The faithful readers of Heart & Soul will be able to recognize many of their favorite writers and lots of their favorite subject matter," said Avent. "I think they will be especially pleased with our new focus on eliminating disparities in health and wealth accumulation.” Yanick Rice-Lamb, the current editorial director, who served in that capacity for several years while the magazine was owned by BET, returns to lead a team of outstanding journalist and lifestyle experts in bringing the information that millions of African-American women came to depend on for over 13 years. Rice-Lamb is joined in leadership by Valorie Burton, life coach, author, and Heart & Soul’s new Editor-At-Large. Their team of editors and writers includes fitness experts, Donna Richardson Joyner, Mocha Lee and Nichelle Hoskins, health and nutrition expert, Rovenia “Dr. Ro” Brock, finance expert, Michelle Singletary, and many more well regarded professionals. Heart & Soul is debuting with a bi-monthly schedule and a rate base of 300,000. The re-launch issue features a cover story on Toni Braxton and her return to good health and to the top of the charts. It also highlights Sheila Crump Johnson, billionaire owner of the Washington Mystics and queen of the Salamander Brands Empire. There are also plenty of articles designed to motivate and inspire readers. To bring back past readers and to recruit new ones Heart & Soul is launching a subscription drive with a heavy emphasis on driving traffic to the Heart & Soul website, www.heartandsoul.com, and its blog at www.heartandsoulmagazine.blogspot.com. “Our goal is to get several thousand subscribers by Christmas 2005," said Avent. “Many in our community have been upset by the loss of so many of our media vehicles to either bankruptcy or sale to majority owned companies. However, if we want our story told by us and if we want to see images of our community portrayed in a positive light we have to support magazines like Heart & Soul with our own dollars.” Go to Target Market News homepage |
