Cable TV Ratings for Week of September 7 - 13
MTV Video Awards takes No.1 cable show; TBS reclaims most watched cable
net title
(September 16, 2009) What became the most talked about cable program of
the past week -- thanks to the antics of Kanye West -- was also the most
watched cable show in black households. The MTV Video Music Awards was
the No.1 show on the Top 25 most popular cable shows with black viewers
during the second week of September. Black viewers were 27 percent of
the total of 9 million viewers [The awards show was also No.1 with white
viewers].
The prime time address on health care reform by President Obama before a
joint session of Congress was watched by more than 32 million viewers.
Eight English-speaking networks carried the speech [with the now
infamous "You lie" outburst from Rep. Joe Wilson of S. Carolina] and no
single network drew enough black viewers for the special to make the Top
25 charts for broadcast or cable. CNN's post speech analysis attracted
838,000 black viewers to be the No.17 show on the list
The race for most watched cable network was reclaimed by TBS, which had
7.6 million viewers for the Tyler Perry block. Nickelodeon notched five
million viewers for five shows, while BET took third place with 4.5
million watchers for five shows.
The total number of viewers for the Top 25 most popular shows in black
households was 30.2 million, according to Nielsen. That’s a 15 percent
increase over the previous week.
