TV Ratings for Week of Aug. 31 - Sept. 6 NBC's
'Dateline' takes rare No.1 spot with expose on death of Steve McNair
(September 9, 2009) As popular as football is in black households, it
seems one of the few programs that could draw more viewers than a game
is an investigation into the death of an NFL champion. Dateline's
hour-long episode into the shooting death of former Tennessee Titan
quarterback, Steve McNair was the No.1 show on the Top 25 broadcast TV
list for the first week of September. The program barely knocked out CSI:Miami with 1.2 million black viewers [The No.1 show in white
households was Tuesday's edition of America's Got Talent].
Dateline helped NBC reduce the lead that CBS had as the week's most
watched network. CBS had a total of 11.2 million black viewers for its
12 shows on the Top 25. That's a drop from the previous week of 4.6
million viewers. NBC had 8.3 million viewers for its nine shows on the
chart. ABC claimed 2.1 million for two programs.
The total number of viewers for the most popular shows in black
households, according to Nielsen research, was 23.4 million. That's a 13
percent increase over the previous week's total.
