Danyel Smith,
formerly of Vibe.com, named executive editor of The Root.com
(September
8, 2009) Danyel Smith, last known in the media business for her work as
content chief for Vibe.com, has been named executive editor of The
Root.com.
Smith, 44, is also a novelist, and was an editor at Time Inc. At The
Root she will assume the position held by managing editor Lynette
Clemetson who stepped down earlier this year.
A memo from The Root's publisher, Donna Byrd, announced Smith's
appointment:
"I am pleased to announce that Danyel Smith will be The Root's new
executive editor. Danyel is the former chief content officer at Vibe
Media Group (which includes Vibe Magazine and Vibe.com). In addition to
being Vibe's first female and first African-American editor-in-chief,
she was a former editor-at-large of Time Inc., a critic for The New York
Times and a contributor to Time Magazine, Rolling Stone, Elle, The
Village Voice, and The New Yorker, among other publications. She is also
an acclaimed novelist, author of More Like Wrestling and Bliss."
"Danyel fills the position left by Lynette Clemetson, who accepted the
Knight-Wallace Fellowship at the University of Michigan earlier this
summer. I would like to extend a special thanks to The Root editorial
team, who has not skipped a beat during this transition, providing
provocative commentary and analysis on everything from the death of
Michael Jackson and Henry Louis Gates' arrest to the confirmation
hearings of Sonia Sotomayor and the Obama health-care plan."
Smith will be based in both New York and Washington, D.C. and will begin
her duties immediately.
