radio's leading personalities come together for MLK Memorial radiothon
(August 22, 2008) In celebration of the 45th anniversary of the March on
Washington and the "I Have a Dream" speech, Clear Channel Radio and the
Washington, DC Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project
Foundation, Inc., today announced the additions of renowned radio
personalities, Steve Harvey, Doug Banks, Tom Joyner, and Michael Baisden
to an all-star ensemble of celebrities for the Clear Channel "Build the
Dream" Radiothon on Thursday, August 28th. The Memorial Foundation also
recently unveiled the commencement of the Verizon Phase I Site
Preparation of the Memorial, a fundraising total of $98.8 million, and a
new fundraising goal of $120 million.
Participants include: Aretha Franklin, Samuel L. Jackson, Musiq
Soulchild, Nia Long, Ice Cube, Stephanie Mills, Cedric The Entertainer,
General Colin Powell, Tavis Smiley, Al Roker, and Soledad O'Brien
The celebrity participants will be featured on select Clear Channel
Radio stations sharing their thoughts about the importance of Dr. King
and the significance of building a national Memorial to honor his ideals
of democracy, justice, hope and love.
"We are honored to have such a renowned group of personalities join
forces in our campaign to honor Dr. King," said Doc Wynter, SVP, Urban
Programming for Clear Channel Radio. "The support of these additional
celebrities in conjunction with 36 Clear Channel stations nationwide
takes us one step closer to reaching the Memorial Foundation's
fundraising goals."
Listeners will be directed to the Memorial Foundation's website
www.mlkradiothon.org and to
(800) MLK-1386 to make a donation and learn more. All funds raised from
the campaign will go towards the Memorial, which will be erected on the
National Mall in Washington, D.C. All donations to the Memorial are tax
deductible.
