(August 14, 2007) The long-awaited, 20-episode second season of "The
Boondocks" will premiere in October as part of Cartoon Network's Adult
Swim programming block. The series is from creator Aaron McGruder and is
based on his award-winning comic strip of the same name. It is produced
by McGruder's production company, Rebel Base, in association with Sony
Pictures Television.
During the recent San Diego Comic-Con, creator and executive producer
Aaron McGruder, along with voice talent Cedric Yarbrough, Gary Anthony
Williams, and producer Carl Jones talked about what's in store for viewers
this fall. Uncle Ruckus (Gary Anthony Williams), a homely and overweight
man who enjoys disassociating himself from anything African-American, will
star in his own reality show next season.
Gangstalicious (Mos Def), whose real name is Frederick, will be returning
to the series. Also making a comeback next season are best friends Gin
Rummy (Samuel L. Jackson) and Ed Wuncler III (Charlie Murphy). Ghostface
Killah and Snoop Dogg will voice yet unnamed characters as well.
In "The Boondocks," when Robert “Granddad” Freeman (John Witherspoon)
becomes legal guardian of his rambunctious grandkids, he moves from the
south side of Chicago to the quiet and safety of “The Boondocks” (in this
case, suburban Woodcrest), hoping that he can ignore them altogether and
enjoy the fourth quarter of his life in peace. But Huey (Regina King), a
10-year-old left wing revolutionary, is determined not to enjoy the
affluence of suburbia. This attitude is seconded by his 8-year-old
brother, Riley, a proud product of contemporary rap culture. Although
they torture each other and provoke the neighborhood, they are no match
for Granddad, who is eccentric even by “crazy-ass-old-black-man”
standards.
