Cable
TV Ratings for Week of July 21 - 27
CNN's 'Black In America' takes on 'House of Payne;' TBS takes most
watched title (July 31,
2008) The CNN heavily promoted special, "Black in America" was rewarded
with a large black audience for the two installments. The Thursday night
installment attracted nearly two million black viewers, according to
Nielsen data, making it the week's second most watched cable show right behind
TBS' "House of Payne."
CNN's airing of the Wednesday debut two-hour segment went head-to-head
with TBS' two-hour block of "Payne" and matched its 1.5 million viewers
for the first half-hour. However, as the evening went on, the Payne
audience grew, eventually drawing 2.5 million for it last half-hour
show. This suggests that viewers left CNN during the two hours and moved
to "Payne."
The week's most watched cable network was TBS which had a total of six
shows on the chart. USA claimed second with five programs, and BET was
third with four.
The total number of viewers for the top 25 cable shows of the week was
27.6 million, or an increase of 18% over the previous week. Most of the
increase can be attributed to "Black In America."
