Black TV Ratings for Week of July 6 -  12
Focus on Michael Jackson lifts ABC's Primetime Family Secrets to No.1 spot

(July 14, 2009) Television is still riding the wave of never-ending interest in singer Michael Jackson's life and death. ABC Primetime scored its first No.1 ranking with black households this year with a Tuesday night airing of a rarely seen interview with Jackson's former wife, Debbie Rowe. The network also notched third place on the week's chart with 20/20's special edition, "Remembering Michael Jackson."

[The most popular show in white households for the week was Wednesday's airing of America's Got Talent on NBC.]

CBS retained its title of the week's most watched network in black households by pulling 11.5 million viewers for its 13 shows on the Top 25. NBC followed with 5.9 million for six programs. ABC was third with 4.1 million for four spots.

The total number of viewers watching the 25 most popular shows, according to Nielsen data, was 23.5 million, virtually the same as the previous week's total.

"UNDER THE INFLUENCE"

Tracing the Hip-Hop Generation's Impact on Brands, Sports, & Pop Culture

By Erin O. Patten

Hip-Hop culture has had a profound impact on marketing in the past two decades and it provided an intersection for brands, sports, and popular culture. Erin O. Patton documents this impact in his new book, Under the Influence--Tracing the Hip-Hop Generation's Impact on Brands, Sports, & Pop Culture.

Adam Graves, senior vice president of Deutsch Advertising says of Under the Influence and Patton: "If there are any marketers out there that still think they can ignore the urban market they'd better think again...This isn't just a book for so-called urban marketers; this should be mandatory reading for every marketer in the country."
