Miller Brewing Co.,
NNPA to recognize the best of the Black Press
(April 28, 2008) Miller Brewing Company will recognize journalistic excellence through its partnership with the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) by sponsoring the 17th Annual A. Philip Randolph Miller Messenger Awards Competition. Writers and editors of NNPA member publications have the opportunity to enter news stories, editorials, or commentaries for the chance to win a coveted award in five separate categories. The five categories are structured to embrace Miller Brewing Company's corporate social investment platform, Miller REACH, which focuses on five primary areas: Responsibility, Employment, AIDS/HIV, Cultural Diversity and Heritage Initiatives. The deadline to enter the competition is May 1, 2008. "It is important for Miller Brewing Company to recognize the hard work of journalists in the Black Press and the service they provide for the African-American community," said Larry Waters, senior director of multicultural relations, Miller Brewing Company. "In the spirit of journalist and civil rights activist A. Phillip Randolph, we are honored to partner with the NNPA to salute cause-driven journalistic excellence." The prestigious awards are named in honor of A. Philip Randolph who from 1917 to 1928 made journalistic history as founder and co-editor of the Messenger, a magazine that addressed the inequities faced by African-Americans. Since 1991, Miller Messenger Awards have been presented to working journalists whose publications are members of the NNPA. Also, known as the Black Press of America, the NNPA is a 181-year-old federation of more than 200 African American community newspapers from across the United States. Articles submitted for consideration must focus on raising awareness of a current event, trend or activity in one of the designated focus areas. Selections must target current events of local, regional, national or international significance in the form of news stories, editorials or commentary. Miller will present five Messenger Awards, totaling $30,000. Winning journalists will be awarded a $5,000 monetary gift, and their corresponding newspaper will receive $1,000 which will be donated to a deserving nonprofit organization of their personal choice. "It is critical that writers and editors, who are working in the trenches to give our community a voice, be recognized for their efforts. Miller Brewing Company understands and supports those efforts," said Dorothy R. Leavell, the NNPA Foundation chair. "Through our partnership to produce the Miller Messenger Awards, we are able to commemorate A. Philip Randolph and salute those that follow in his steps." Winners of the Miller Messenger Awards will be announced during The NNPA Annual Conference in Louisville June 25 - 27, 2008.
