The
Week of April 10 - 16
Nielsen’s cable rankings now reflect BET’s dominance among top 25 favorite
shows
(April
20, 2006) After addressing questions from Black Entertainment Television
about its formula for calculating black households’ primetime cable
viewing habits, Nielsen has refined its methodology for its weekly
rankings. The list, which Target Market News has been publishing
exclusively since the beginning of the year, now reflects BET dominance
among the most popular cable programs with black viewers.
[More information about how the methodology has changed will be reported
soon.]
The winner for the second week in April, however, was World Wrestling
Entertainment, which attracted 836,000 black homes to its Monday night
show. BET’s three most popular programs took second, third and fourth
place. The new methodology increases the number of adult-oriented programs
on the list and includes programs watched live and recorded shows viewed
the same day they aired. The networks other than BET placing multiple
winners on the list were USA with four and TNT with three.
The overall number of black households watching the top 25 cable programs
was 14.7 million.

'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life
As the American economy continues to move sluggishly,
African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
