9:00 The African-American Magazine Market: Interpreting the latest trends
and research data
This session will offer new research examining
how black consumers’ relationships with magazines are growing and
changing. An analysis will be presented of how black-oriented
magazines fare against all titles in attracting advertising. Data from
research conducted by Target Market News, Johnson Publishing Co.,
Publishers Information Bureau and others will be presented
10:00 Finding capital for start-ups, expansions and acquisitions
The most successful black magazines in the nation all started with less
than $1 million. But an investment of more than $30 million couldn’t
guarantee success for others. So just how much capital do you need to make
your magazine a success? And where can you get it from? Find out from our
panel of publishers, investors and financial gurus about ways to get the
funding your publication needs.
11:00 Circulation choices: Newsstands, controlled circulation and
supplements
There’s more than one way to get your magazine into the hands of your
target audience. Perhaps the road to success for your publication consists
of multiple means of distribution. Hear ideas from publishers that are
using traditional and innovative distribution strategies to reach readers.
Events and The Net: Finding revenues beyond the printed page
The tightening advertising market has forced all publishers to look to
additional means of raising revenues. Virtually all magazines have
found it necessary to offer television shows, promotional events, online
access, conferences and other vehicles to advertisers. Discover from those
who have done successfully how to expand your magazine’s revenue streams.
12:00 Lunch and Keynote Address
1:00 Advertising success stories: The sellers’ perspective
How do you cut through the competition and achieve selling success with
advertisers? What is your competition doing that you’re not? Regardless of
your magazine’s size or history, there are tried and true methods that can
produce results. This session will offer trade secrets from top-rated
publishers and advertising sales directors on what’s required in today’s
marketplace.
2:00 Advertising sales: What ad agencies and clients are looking for
What do advertisers want? Events, exclusivity, access to your Web site and
databases. Is it possible to make your magazine indispensable? If it
seems like every day brings a new demand from advertisers, then this
session will offer you new insights. Hear the answers directly from the
source when our panel discusses the challenges and needs that form
advertising strategies.
3:00 Who should sell your advertising? How to choose a sales force
There is perhaps no more critical decision to be made by publishers than
choosing who will be responsible for reaching your magazine’s advertising
goals. Finding and retaining productive sales people is an on-going
concern. Should you look for an outside sales rep firm? What kind of
professional experience should prospective salespersons have? How large
does your sales force have to be? Gain insight into these questions by
exchanging ideas with some of the best sales people in the business.
4:00 Organizational Forum: The African-American Magazine Publishers
Association
In response to magazine publishers who attended our 2003 Fall Summit, we
are hosting the first organizational session for the creation of a new
trade association. This will be a discussion open to all African-American
magazine publishers and professionals and will include a review of
proposed by-laws, guidelines and resolutions.
